Waste Not, Want Not: DIY Onion Powder from Onion Peels!
Did you know you can turn your leftover onion peels into rich, flavorful onion powder? It’s the perfect zero-waste kitchen project — no waste, all flavor!
Instead of tossing those papery outer layers, try this simple method to turn them into a homemade seasoning you’ll reach for again and again.
Here’s How to Make Onion Powder from Peels:
1. Save the Peels
After chopping onions, don’t throw away the skins! Collect them in a bowl or freezer bag until you have enough to work with.
2. Dry Them Out
Lay the peels flat on a baking sheet and bake at 200°F (90°C) for 1–2 hours, or until fully dried and crispy. I use my dehydrator for hands-free, even drying.
3. Grind Into Powder
Toss the dried peels into a high-powered blender (like a Vitamix) or a spice grinder. Blend until you have a fine, fragrant powder.
4. Store It
Pour the powder into a clean mason jar or spice container with an airtight seal. For even longer shelf life, use a handheld vacuum sealer and toss in an oxygen absorber to keep it dry.
